The file you've posted simply is not a jpeg-file but a windows-bmp-file
(check it e.g. via file command on command-line). Gimp tries to open it
with the jpeg-filter, but fails with the above mentioned error-message.
Rename it to rubberchicken.bmp and it will work.

I also own a P35. The problem is not gnome-power-manager, but a broken
DSDT.
When g-p-m changes the brightness through the backlight sysfs
(/sys/class/backlight/asus/brightness), there's also an ACPI event
generated as if the user pressed the the Fn keys.
The workaround is not to kill g-p-m,
I have the same problem with my Laptop Acer Aspire 3100 (Volume it just goes
from 0 to 11% with the Fn+Up / Fn+ Down)
So, i can confirm this... i hope this could be fixed before final Gutsy
release... which is very near by now...

For me GIMP opens the file without problems, did what you said. Only eog
does not (but this is something different). I'm running ubuntu gutsy,
up-to-date, with default gnome-desktop. GIMP-package is

twice, there may have been a new version of restricted modules).

8.41.7 includes extremely flaky support for R5xx cards and below. On my
X1400 OpenGL stutters every 2 seconds.
8.42 is supposed to be suppported across all cards, but at any rate this
is not targetable for Gutsy.
