I have found part of the problem. After uninstalling ATI driver fglrx,
OpenOffice will boot correctly. Lowering the screen resolution using

My Thinkpad x60 has a recovery partition (FAT32, hda0,1) and a Windows

One stupid question: Why do you want to login as root into a graphical
environment? You can easily administer your system using sudo, if you
want the root account to be activated, you can do everything as root
using gksu (e.g starting nautilus, terminal etc).
