I can confirm that this still happens on Ubuntu Gutsy. Only the left

I tried Ubutnu Gutsy live CD (daily build 8.10.2007) and 3d acceleration
is not enabled on ATI Mobility Radeon 9200. I have notebook HP Compaq
nx7010 (1680x1050). With Feisty Live CD acceleration works out-of-the
box.

I can confirm this as well, seems to be some kind of order dependency
issue between dbus and HAL.

Uninstalling the packages above didn't help, so I reinstalled the gutsy
packages (upgrade).
I saw on http://localhost:631 that cups first did something with
'ghostscript', so I searched for packages in synaptic that matches
'ghostscript'. I deinstalled the packages:
gs-esp-x gimp-print
addition: I found out that the bug shows always up if I boot the laptop
connected to the powerline.
If the laptop is booted in battery mode without connection to
the powerline it seems
to work without the crazy behaviour.

After booting from the 7.10 beta live CD, I see the desktop, but no
panels come up at all (even after clicking the desktop as others have
mentioned). Ctrl-Alt+Backspace logs out and logs back in automatically,
