I can reproduce this problem with 7.10 installed on my notebook. eth0 (in my
case) just doesn't come up. a simple
$ sudo ifup eth0
is enough to make it work with a static ip.

I had this on my 915 chip with 4:3 screen, too. While loading X, it
seems like it has troubles finding the right resolution (although the
only one used is 1024x768), causing screen "blinking" for 2 or 3 times
until it finally starts. With i810-driver this does not happen.

the repository that only installs translations which are over 90%
complete; in order to slim down the package size to a manageable 1.3MB.

Now, I have reproduced this also in Gutsy. However, I agree with you that
procedure is too complicated. This is not a "bug" but a normal behaviour of
this application. I think that your suggestions may be took into consideration
as wishlist.

I also have experienced this problem from as early as Hoary. It seems to
be a persistent problem.
This certainly doesn't happen with any other distros that I've used
(Fedora, openSUSE etc) so not sure why Ubuntu should be different in
this respect.
