Looks like commit b827ca9a87aac6affcc84563211fe27598529e0f could be the
culprit. Defining CONFIG_SND_HDA_GENERIC seems to disable some stuff in
hda_codec.c, such as finding the proper codec.

I have the same issue with a similar computer configuration and Gutsy
64-bit, but happens only when I have memory remapping enabled (needed
because of 4 GB of RAM) in the BIOS. With memory remapping disabled it
detects only 3.3 GB but everything is OK.

Could be related to #93273. I remember in Feisty, I had to add alsa-
utils restart to the suspend/resume scripts to get the audio working,
because after suspend, the 2496 card was in its initial state with the
rate locking on and rate set to 8000 even if it was working before
suspend.

Binary package hint: hotkeys
Since the latest updates on 22/08/07 volume hotkeys on my laptop HP
nc6400 don't work anymore. When I hit volume up/down or mute key the
volume bar appears but no change is made. I changed the mixer from Alsa
to OSS no change.

Of course, it appears that a correct solution has not been found.
The example rules file creates device files like /dev/1-1 with the
described permissions and ownership. It does not affect the files
/dev/bus/usb/*/* which gnupg accesses, and so non-root users still can't
access the smart card.
