I solved this by installing the pmount package. umount still does not
work, but pumount does. (pumount tells hald to unmount the drive. hald
runs as root and performs the permission check itself.)
I was positively surprised that eject uses pumount by default if it is
available.

that workaround didn't work for me, so its not really a workaround if it
doesn't work for everybody. plus when i went into kontact to select
components, basket wasn't there to enable or disable. I stress again,
that is not a valid workaround as it did not work for me.

Correction: pumount does not seem to unmount the device by calling on
hal. pumount rather unmounts the device itself. For that purpose,
pumount is installed suid root. (Which is not a perfect solution, due to
the potential security problems any binary suid root introduces...)

I think I got bitten by this as well.
I had to run f-spot-sqlite-upgrade to stop f-spot complaining about index is 0
something something -1.
f-spot would freeze when trying to tag an image and would complain when trying
to import photos.
The photos got copied to the Photos folder but did not get
