after system shutdown. Windows shutdown turns all USB devices off.

Had same problem. Azureus Crashed after shutdown caused by battery problem.
Deleting Log files (in ~/.azureus/ ; ~/.azureus/logs ; ~/.azureus/logs/save)
worked.

As I currently run Gutsy my Gnome and Xfce DE are getting unstable at
times. When they are unusable, I fall back to ION3 as my WM. ION3 uses
different approach in dealing with windows and makes every application
window open in full width and height. After using Piding in ION3
Downloading and installing the packages by hand fixes the problem.

I've tryed Parted Magic, which is based on gentoo (kernel 2.6.22) I think...
and it doesn't see my harddrive as well.
I've not tried other distribution. Which live CD do you advise?
