So I looked into more detail into the provided link (thanks it has been very
educational).
The one obvious potential solution is to set the HorizSync and VertRefresh
properly. Unfortunately I cannot find any information on those specs for my
computer screen.

That may well be because the the proprietary drivers poke a new modeline in for

The ESI Maya44 card (based on Envy24HT chip which is supported by alsa)
does not work on Ubuntu and other Linux distros. There is no sound, even
after compiling the newest alsa with ice1724 driver and configuring ALSA
with alsaconf.
