Try changing the resolution in /etc/usplash.conf to match the vga=*
resolution that you're setting up ('dmesg | grep "vesafb: mode"' if
you're not sure what resolution you're picking) and regenerate your
initramfs with "sudo update-initramfs -u".

In my particular case, I removed apparmor, and added a cupsys user back
to the passwd file. That seemed to fix the installation issue.
