is fixed but yes I use Feisty, although with another machine I use
Mandriva as it has less trouble with the broadcomm driver therein. On

Switching the restricted drive OFF solved the problem. Switching the
user does not freeze the computer anymore. The X server restarts and
GDM window shows up.
Even with the -16 kernel is everything fine.

The problem is that, like on_ac_power, e2fsck checks for
/proc/acpi/ac_adapter/*/state in unix.c:is_on_batt().
This directory will not exist until the ac module is loaded.
The ac module is loaded by /etc/rc2.d/S10acpid, which runs after
/etc/rcS.d/S20checkroot.sh and /etc/rcS.d/S30checkfs.sh, so

This is still a problem under Kubuntu Feisty.
An external USB 2.0 hard disk formatted with Ext3 writes at about 600KB/s with
the sync option enabled.
Remounting the drive async gives around 20MB/s write speed.

Same problem seen here too.
I nominated this for feisty, since fixing it for gutsy doesn't really
help too much -- if feisty is broken then I can't upgrade to gutsy!
