further indagating, manually restarting dbus daemon with:
sudo /etc/init.d/dbus restart
and then restarting gnome-power-manager enabled it to work properly.
Since HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) is kickstarted subsequently to
dbus I've dumped to file hal-device before and after having it restar

It would be just great if Gdebi offered a "launch program" button in the
dialog that notifies you that the program has been installed. Having the
program's name and icon in it would be extra cool.

On my ubuntu system, it turned out to be a problem with X.org font
paths. At some point (I think between hoary and breezy) the location
of the fonts changed but the xorg.conf file didn't get changed during
the upgrade.
Once I fixed up the xorg.conf font paths, the problem went away.

That would be a good option, as it would be a useable substitution
across other packages that require msttcorefonts. Also it would mean
future or unpatched themes for mythtv would still function correctly.

If you middle-click on the grip between the input box and the message
