Maarten, could you try to also install the gdm package; it will ask you
what you want as your default dm, so choose kdm. I remember I installed
that package as well on my fresh Dell Inspiron system and I added the
changes above. After that combined action, the problems were solved for
me.

I had extremely low/absent sound on my Toshiba A105-S4134.
Upgrading the alsa drivers to the most recent version made the sound work some
of the time.
however, adding 'options snd-hda-intel model=auto' to my /etc/modprobe.d

After I upgrade my system to gutsy, the knetworkmanager stop work.
When I manually run it from the console, it gives info like below:
