I had a similar problem. I had to set ACPI APIC support to disabled in the
BIOS. After that it worked(almost, I had also to remove powernowd(see bug
#85370)).

called dmesg.log. That should be added to you bug report as an

I have 33162 KB of free space in /boot and the update-manager complains
about needing at least something about 7 MB. That's why I've tried
remounting and moving bits and bytes over and over again. A fix to the
message would be a godsend.

As much as I like the idea of free software, it never fails to frustrate
me. Linux for the desktop is still years behind... Windows 95!! It
doesn't even have a decent Device Manager!! Come on!!
I can't install 7.04 (Feisty Fawn). Gparted says that the disk is
unallocated, and fdisk says: "Warning:
BTW, I have Windows XP x64 edition already installed plus the partitions
that were left of a Ubuntu 6 intallation that I never used anymore
because after an update it disabled the network connection forever. Talk
about reasons to be MAD!!!

If it crashes with the "safe graphics mode" (-> vesa driver instead of
ati) it means it has nothing to do with this bug. From what you explain,
it crashes before X is even started.
