Hi, in my case, it sometimes crashes also a long time after startup
(e.g. 4 hours) apparently without any reason. Last time I was not at the
computer, and when I was back I found it crashed.

It's reproduceable for me. However, it's not the icon that's not
transparent (the icon is, at /usr/share/icons/hicolor/16x16/apps
/updates-notifier.png); it's the widget that it's on. Note also that the
problem isn't update-manager, it's update-notifier, so we're attached to
the wrong package here.
Have you installed flashplugin-nonfree, or otherwise installed Adobe
Flash Player? If so, please remove it and check if the problem persists.

I don't have Dapper any more to test it, but this was supposedly fixed
to dapper. Try creating a file called .gnomerc in your user's home
directory and placing the umask in it. That has worked in Feisty for
me.

Here in France, Tecom AH4222 is distributed by one of the major FAIs,
and it suffers from this bug too.

Same by me. This annoying loss of focus also happens if you mark to
install some package, that is dependend on some other packages. A window
appears to confirm the installation of these extra packages. After you
click "OK" the list of the packages loses focus.

I went back to try again, it was the Open GL link I had just tried, not
Gnome, sorry. Well, it crashed again on clicking that link, so it is
repeatable. Here is the new backtrace:

I see little point to both the Enable desktop effects option and the
restricted drivers manager if they refuse to do what the user asks. The
problem is that if the user's monitor isn't properly configured by xorg,
then the user HAS to edit xorg to get the desired results. Once
I tried to change the affected package from update-manager to update-
notifier, but something went wrong: packages "update-manager (Baltix)"
and "update-notifier (Baltix)" are not supposed to be there.
Since there's no way to delete them (at least I don't see it), only

Johnny, you have two ways for changing the Kmenu icon:
1 - Go to /usr/share/icons/$YOUR_ICONSET/$SIZE/apps and replace the file
kmenu.png with your custom "kmenu.png";
2 - Using kbfx you can, easily, set your custom Kmenu icon.
