I have found a similar behaviour using du on a cifs from Windows
mounted directory, although only with files that contain spaces in their
file names.
On ext3 filesystem I had no problems with such files.
Can you give some more information about the filesystem, mounting, as
well the kind of file

Because we're now using libata-pata, the devices are now scsi devices,
and as such are "/dev/sdXX". If you had been using UUID it would have
taken care of this, as this is why we use UUIDs in the first place...
So, not a kernel bug.

I don't really if this is related or not. I run feisty on a MacBook
Black 1st gen.
Since I upgraded from edgy to feisty my HFS+ partition is getting
mounted automatically and I have two DVD±RW drives in nautilus.
In my /etc/fstab I have no entry for the HFS+ partition and one entry
for the DVD±RW

I can confirm this. The problem is that kile on amd64 was forgotten when
syncing with debian. Even kile-i18n is 1.9, whereas kile is still 1.8

Please check if there is a BIOS update for your system. It's technically
not possible for the kernel to directly corrupt the BIOS. It does make
calls into the BIOS to perform certain operations (like hibernate), but
does not modify the BIOS directly.
Most likely this is a buggy BIOS.

I've become so desperate with the state of local file sharing that I
actually discovered "gshare", which is a built-in FTP using Avahi. Works
perfectly, and no headaches. Of course this is no solution for samba,
it's just a workaround in the meantime:

The UUID abstraction happened during the transition from dapper-->edgy.
I suspect you have edited /etc/fstab by hand. Now that Feisty uses
lib_pata, you must use UUID or /dev/sdX names.
