The problem is that the directory .config/autostart/ is owned by root
and not by your user. Try to change the owner with the command chown.
Otherwise, launch gnome-session-properties as root and retry.

I absolutely agree with the OP. I noticed this got worse in Edgy.
Before that (and since the early kubuntu releases), if I saved a profile
it would load the same last settings I used.

I discovered that when I uninstalled "totem-Mozilla" plugin Firefox
stopped disappearing. I could reinstall "totem-Mozilla" and go to
a web page that had any Windows media files and Firefox would
disappear.

I doubt these are actually causing problems. These messages started
appearing because of some new sanity checks. They'll still be in dmesg,
but they wont clutter your screen. I'd seriously check into a BIOS
update though.
