Finally fixed! After an upgrade from Edgy to Fiesty Herd 4, I still had
the same problem. After playing around with /etc/defaults/acpi-support I
added 'nm-applet' to the stop-restart services section and it works just
fine. Suspend is quick as quick can be and hibernate takes about a
minute.

This happens to me as well. I'm running Edgy on a thinkpad laptop with a
Radeon 9600-based card. Using the 'radeon' driver, external VGA works
fine, but DVI doesn't work. When using fglrx, everything works fine.

do those static libs get installed by make install? Otherwise, its
somehow an upstream bug. Though this does not mean that we can't fix it
without help of upstream.

If I blacklist prism2_pci and orinoco_pci all is well. Network-manager
works with hostap_pci and even supports encryption

The mixer-applet2 crash notification stopped over a week ago after a
dist-upgrade. The Gnome Settings Daemon notification still appears
today after a dist-upgrade about 20 minutes ago (it's now 10:50 AM PDT,
18:50 UTC).
