Well, as I was who started the bug, I would like to give my opinion,
although I am just a common user. I really don't care if Synaptic is in
the Applications or System menu. What I like is to have its launcher
easy to access, and with the Control Center it had turned a bit more
difficult.
But it s

You cannot do any dist-upgrade or update-manager kernel upgrade,
hibernate and resume. GRUB picks the new kernel (which won't read the
suspend image) instead of the old one which can.

I tried to install the install Brothers own driver as suggested by
Bananabob and this didn't work.

You're right Martin, the problem comes from the kernel, which goes on
detecting USB connections although my USB device is disconnnected. (and
furthermore, it cannot handle the USB device).

Well i have managed to fix the problem on my laptop with a bit of
intervention.
Yes, the installer stopped working once it got to the section where it
checks your hardware and loads modules (after installing packages), but
i just cancelled the installer and then continued myself.

Evolution seems to use libgnutls for TLS and SSL. Maybe mail-
notification should be changed to use this lib instead of openssl.

I confirm that upstream patch pointed out by dlr fixes the eclipse javahl
crashing issue. Although I'm unable to get eclipse to find javahl interafce
(even when using LD_LIBRARY_PATH), it doesn't crash anymore.
If this works for others too, it would be good to get this as SRU.

I came to realize that that my previous post did not install the
"HL-1430 for CUPS" driver.
What needs to be done in order to install the correct driver is:

After turning on the printer and typing "lpinfo -v" in a console i get
my usb printer listed as "direct usb://Brother/HL-1430%20series" , then
I print a job and run "lpinfo -v" again and if the printer is still

Comments should indicate that problem is in subversion's "javahl
bindings native global initialization". Impact is serious because of the
segfault it causes. Among other things, jvm running eclipse dies when
javahl tries to initialize. Ups

uhm, there should be nothing special about my vi setup, because i do not
use it actually... it's only installed because it is in the default
packages...
vim seems to be installed correctly, even with those error messages - i
tried to run it right now and it works nicely...

"blastwave" is a software distribution for Sun Solaris, so it is wildly
out of topic here ;-)
I suffer from the same problem. For me, my printers are broadcast by a
cups server over the network. I can reproduce it with the live CD
(changing Browsing to On in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, wait for printers
if bug is processed upstream we are "in progress"
