Maybe /etc/kernel-img.conf is changed to not mess with symlinks. Can you send that file? Regardless, update-initramfs shouldn't be trying to do this for symlinks. What I believe is happening is that it's doing it for the running kernel. Did you uninstall 2.6.17-50 and then perform this upgrade? -
