Here are the answers based on what I have installed in Synaptic:
1. I will have to wait to see if I get another crash in the future.
2. Mozilla Plugin 0.3.6-2ubuntu2
GPL Flash Library - Mozilla Plugin 0.4.13-8ubuntu1
Adobe Flash Plugin Installer 9.0.31.0.1ubuntu1
3. J2
This is still happening on a feisty beta3 on a Dell Optiplex 745 - it
eventually gets there but takes ages.

I can confirm this. I think that this bug should be given a high
priority, as one is completely unable to make a report in OOo base
without it.
For anyone who needs a working OOo, remove openoffice.org and then
install it from these packages:
For x86:
http://ftp.linux.cz/pub/localization/OpenOffi
Note that this has only been fixed in the current development release
(Feisty) of Ubuntu.

Since usplash is started before the root fs is mounted it'd seem to be
necessary. Perhaps the default config file should state this.

I had the same problem. I was running Firefox 2.0.0.1 too and also
OpenOffice.org. Suddenly it crashed for no reason. Actually I wasn't
doing anything. Running Ubuntu Edgy too, with all the upgrades.

While we could certainly add this to update-manager I think it should be
done in grub so that people who upgrade with a different method (apt-get
dist-upgrade, synaptic etc) get the benefit of this too.

Even with metacity I get very jumpy performance and the screen
resolution does not match the actual resolution.
