Log is output of /var/log/syslog just when bootup finishes, and network
manager shows no connection. Do note the System, Control center, Network, DNS
already shows entries from the gateway and the DSL service nameserver so eth0
has already
The mtools dependence of syslinux is kind of silly ... Since only root
can mount filesystems, but mtools can operate on any msdos filesystem
with the appropriate permissions, the author decided to simply use
mtools to copy the bootloader (LDLINUX.SYS) onto the disk.

I also confirm this bug just as described above. Another way to get all
the items to show is by just adding an item that is not in menu. It
seems like this is a refresh problem.

It also occurs on my Dell XPS M1210. Adding blacklist video to
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist fixes the issue, and the brightness control
works as expected (it's handled in hardware, not software, as evidence
by the keys working in GRUB or while Ubuntu is starting).

I'm currently on 6.10, but I get the same failure after booting a 6.06
live cd and I recently tried booting from a Feisty CD (downloaded ~
1/26) and the issue is still there.
Sorry I had an error in my original post, I found DSL 3.2 (kernel
2.4.31), not Knoppix worked fine with this converter,
I believe this was discussed in depth by the development teams, after
the whole Iceweasel thing with Debian, if Firefox is in Ubuntu now the
way it is then I am sure it is intentional that they are doing so with
