I'm was also having random segfaults in multiple apps on my laptop
install of Edgy. Dapper was fine and the crashes showed up nearly
immediately. I'm not totally sure if the issue is fixed now or not as I
haven't been using my laptop recently, but it did seem to improve a few
weeks back.

I can confirm this on my Thinkpad T42p with up to date Edgy. The system
freezes immediately after I have removed the cd drive off the ultrabay.

I've attached a new diff file that
a) corrects a problem with the first diff (bogus error messages when run
as root),
b) has better error messages for the block dev check (do NOT suggest
changing perms, that would be a security problem), and
c) corrects the hdparm silent failure problem.

A followup ...
OK the problem came back big time, within 2-3 hours of starting kmail
around 6 accounts would be locked out.
In desperation I purged kmail, wiped all its accounts, re-installed &
setup, reinstalled lots of apps in kmails dependency tree - same problem
!
So in desperation I contact
