The reason is that udev currently disables creation of device-mapper
nodes. To enable it for you, you can comment the 'KERNEL=="dm-[0-9]*"'
rule in /etc/udev/rules.d/20-names.rules.

to the IDE hard disk somehow. I checked from the
livecd when it was connected and qtparted showed the drive normally and
looked correct. Also it worked fine on the feisty install that I was
replacing.

I am sorry. It was the one provided by Ubuntu for amd64 5.04 which I
upgraded to 5.10. That was when the error occurred, trying to upgrade
to amd64 6.06. I no longer have Ubuntu 5.10 on my system. I did a
clean install of Ubuntu amd64 6.10. Thank you for your time.
