In fact When I tried without the "-d" switch, it crashed in a way the only
thing I could do back then was to reinstall the system (I don't remember the
details).
I removed the nvidia-glx before it, but it didn't help. Now I'm running 6.10,
but I couldn't upgrade.

It also happens with a Matrox G450 video card, it seems to be selecting
the highest possible resolution the card can do and ignoring the monitor
limits.

I can't really tell how long it takes, often no more than a few minutes
if I had to guess. I use Edgy and the easiest way to reproduce this is
to do a 'sudo ...' in e.g. konsole, 'exit' and trying to run Adept as
soon as possible. Sometimes it's (seemingly) persistent and the only
thing that works
Thank you for your report this feature is already available in Ubuntu
you should have a file called initrd.bak. I had a similar experience
with Feisty and just replaced the initrd's and set the old kernel image
as default and everything worked.
