I also had ffmpeg crash while encoding an AVI file produced from a DV camera by Windows Movie Maker. This worked first time round when the AVI was stored on local machine, but the second AVI was too large to fit on the local HDD; so I mounted the windows machine with smbfs and tried it that way.
