It seems that this problem is due to improper shutdown (halt). If I kill (by
pushing the power button for 5 secs) the laptop (HP nx6325) boots up a lot
faster (it doesn't waste so much time 'till grub appears) and the battery

I think I may have fixed the problem. I think it may have been related
to the persistent "Unable to access hardware clock" message I've been
getting on login.
After a bit of reading online, I traced that problem to the nonexistence
of the /dev/rtc device. I've now added a new line to the
/etc/in
I am using Dapper. (I think there must be several other bugs in Edgy and
I kind of like the idea, that bugs are fixed in all supported releases,
once found.) I don't think this is the same bug.

I get an "Unable to load the chm file..." error when trying to open one
through a KIO slave such as media:/ or home:/. Works fine when opened
directly from the path, so looks like kchmviewer doesn't support KIO
slaves.

same here on feisty. changed password with passwd and still the same
problem. also I could not change via system-admin-users/groups because
after i enter my password, the app just locks up. could be related to
this. posting my auth.log

Btw, I forgot to mention, vanilla OOo installs to /opt/.
On 32 Bit systems (i386, x86, ...), installation should be the same like
presented above, but without the need for the ia32-libs, and I can't
tell you how OOo's UI will look like.
Attached is a screenshot from my OOo installed like describe
the menu entry is from uim-applet-gnome and uim-pref-gtk is from uim-
gtk2.0 as verified by "dpkg -S". uim-applet-gnome depends on uim-
gtk2.0. So dependencies look OK.
Pavel, can you still reproduce this problem? What version of ubuntu
were you using?

I resolve this problem, doing this:
sudo apt-get remove evolution # this remove ubuntu-desktop but don't worry
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
And tomorow i will do
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
