Same problem of yours with an hp nx7400 notebook (intel 945gma).
xset dpms off
shuts down the backlight for a few seconds.
Only vbetool dpms off shuts down backlight really.

this is in fact not one bug, but three:
1) dosfsck is buggy
2) other file systems are checked during boot
3) file system checks depend on a buggy program
I'm pretty much interested in fixing 1). So any useful info how
reproduce this are highly app

documentation portion of it. Do you think this would be good in the
Desktop Guide or perhas in the Switching From Windows Guide (which

Hi,
It worked in Edgy with 2.6.17-10-generic.
On Feisty, it is using the driver installed by Ubuntu (I guess zd1211rw,
as that's what was used previously).
I will try the 386 kernel.

Confirming, it crashes when an other theme is selected (which theme is

I did a fresh install of 6.10 server amd64 and saw the same results just

I have sucessfully reproduced the issue by typing "sudo -s init 1" or
"sudo -s telinit 1" at the console (vt1) while being in runlevel 5. I
observed my screen flickering and the system switching to vt7 where I
could watch the system going to runlevel 1. However, the focus seemed
to stay at vt7 an
