I can also confirm this bug for Edgy and with sun's jre 1.6.0-rc-b103.
Checked with someone using fedora6 and sun jre 1.5 and he doesn't have

I remembered what initially caused the problem on my original
installation. The first time I saw the error was after downgrading totem
(and totem-gstreamer) from 1.4.3-0ubuntu1 to 1.4.1-0ubuntu4. I did this
because the totem browser plugin wasn't available for 1.4.3-0ubuntu1.

The errors from zlib look consistent with a faulty memory module. As the
installer now works well for the reporter it is unlikely that this bug
ticket will lead to any further resolutions.

I'm finding in edgy with the latest NVidia drivers that I'm no longer
seeing this behavior with X. Firefox still sucks up RAM, but it gets
freed when Firefox quits. So maybe this is more caused by bugs in
specific video drivers than by Xorg itself?

Dodi, thanks for pointing out the GNOME bugzilla information. I
therefore assigned this issue to the Ubuntu GNOME team. See my previous
comment for specific information as well as a proposed fix.
There's a possibility that this is a Debian issue (since most of the

My system doesn't crash, but boy apport-gtk brings it to its knees.
I've uninstalled it, because whenever I do encounter a crash, it takes
me basically a minute to get back to where I was rather than the 10
seconds or so it would have done if apport-gtk wasn't doing stuff (e.g.,
bringing Firefox b

I have the same problem when using the live cd.
I rarely get to the point where the system has started up completly, in most
cases it crashes while loading...
When I try again, i'll make a pic of the screen...
