If does not end on -generic, you shoul reboot and choose the -generic

I can confirm that this is a 'linux-image-2.6.17-10-386'-only problem.
The linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic has no such problem and scales the
frequency down to 800MHz and up when needed.
As a side effect the cooling fan is not working so often as earlier, I
think it depends on the frequency as well

Hold the investigation a bit. I've suddenly started to receive this on
earlier kernels too. It might have been caused by a failing dvd-rom
unit. Anyway, it doesn't seem like a regression bug for now.

2. Select "open with package installer"
3. click install package after downloaded
4. close firefox (because you don't need it anymore)
5. Enter your password for sudo
6. package manager crashes because the deb file was deleted in the moment you
closed

backtrace of the hang? When that happens open a command line and type
"gdb -p $(pidof nautilus)" and then on the gdb prompt "thread apply all
bt" and copy that to a comment
