Kubuntu-desktop could be reduced to *really* common and essential package, and
add some (2 or 3) specialized meta-packages, such as kubuntu-laptop-addons that
would contain wireless, bluetooth and other specific packages.

belocs-locales-bin; it's not quite such an immediately obvious win as it
takes up another couple of megabytes of disk space, although that's not

It looks that the problem persists. I've two kubuntu dapper up-to-date, a
desktop and a laptop. Recently my laptop was unable to log in KDE, because my
root partition was fool. And on my desktop, I've currently :

I have upgraded from Dapper to edgy,
I have the latest packages from Edgy repos as of today,
I installed the patch,

I'm on kubuntu dapper, and I've related problem with smb authentification to
browse shared directory on a AD network.
All works fine with smbclient, but it's not possible with konqueror. I've tried
with an empty user account with several addresses :
- smb://server/directory
- smb://[EMAIL PROTE
/var/log/syslog is not strictly neccessary but may help with some kind
of problems. Chances are that the developers will be still able to
diagnose the proble so I guess that's why it wasn't included in the
error message. Thanks!

I experience the same thing on a Thinkpad T41 with a ATI Radeon 7500 M7.
As soon as I enable MergedFB and attach a second display I experience
occasional freezes. No need to invoke any xrand tool.

This has been fixed in Debian with 1.2.9-15. I'm not sure where exactly
it was fixed though, too many font/path fixes in the debian changelog. I
could not reproduce it though.

i have the same problem and an workaround for ubuntu dapper, but isn't
fine.
apt-get install xserver-xorg-driver-i810=1:1.4.1.3-0ubuntu6
then restart (X), Ctrl+Alt+BS
this version works fine.
the new version in dapper (1:1.5.0.1-0ubuntu2) is buggy
i hope someone find a better way

I installed vsftpd and it was started automatically. I did a "sudo
/etc/init.d/vsftpd stop" and then "ps | grep vsftp" and it didn't show up.
Although now that I'm reading your previous comment more carefully, it seems
that I didn't even understand the problem to begin with. Sorry for this.

I too get the "error failed to initialize HAL" when starting up Gnome.
When I change to KDE at startup, is "seems" to start normally, but if I
try to use Konqueror to browse files, - i.e. by clicking on a folder -
Konqueror hangs.
Also, if I recall corrrectly, when I clicked on the KDE main menu,
