After a few weeks of testing I have found

to be much better and hardly had any problems with my WLAN.

The new kernel does not seem to work perfectly. Currently, I am down
to a transfer rate of 800 kb/s which is still better than the previous
ca. 200 kb/s.
I switched WLAN off and on using the radio kill switch but it did not
make a difference.

A first test has shown a stable transfer rate of 3.2 MB/s which is ok.

Thanks for looking into this.
Meanwhile I have installed the officially released 64bit version of
Ubuntu.
Things are strange. After a fresh installation and a reboot WLAN did
not work at all (except for discovery/scanning).
There were error messages regarding the firmware.
