After further googling and tinkering, the solution I discovered is as
follows:
Running gstreamer-properties showed that some Default Input plugin was
"Custom" and the pipeline was something I don't remember. This didn't
seem right, so I changed the plugin to ALSA and then the mic worked.
However,
** Package changed: ubuntu => alsa-driver (Ubuntu)

Two comments. As of very recently I have started getting an error
message on boot or waking up from suspend that says "System program
problem detected." I am wondering if any of these things has to do with
a recent install/upgrade kernel patch with headers to fix the suspend
problem on my lenovo
