That's right, I had to make some changes to get my install to work. But out
of the box, still doesn't work

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue
for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Almost forgot, thanks. Option "VBERestore" "true" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
solves this problem, console font looks like normal. But console use
only 640x480 pixels, and this is not a problem for me.
I haven't any problems in XServer mode. Problems was only in case of
returning from XServer mode to co
I have a machine with a Intel 82845G with the same problem.
I was able to fix this by changing the setting for the amount of shared memory
for the card from 1024K to 8192K in the BIOS.
On mine, you boot into the BIOS, go to the 'Devices' menu, choose 'Video
Setup', then change 'Shared System M

Same problem, same OS, (2.6.20-15-generic kernel). Slightly different
hardware (Dimension 4600), but same graphics. (And same background -
I've never seen the boot up display, so I didn't even know it existed!)
I've tried video=i810fb; that solves the 40 columns problem, but means that

If I boot passing video=vga16fb to the kernel, I can see the splash
screen (albeit with very few colors) and the console works properly
after that. So I think this has to do with vesafb, which is loaded by
default.
