Resolved: Turns out my wireless LAN interferes with my wireless
keyboard/mouse. Looks like a hardware issue to me.

Update: I just had the same problem with the keyboard. The text appeared
with a several second long delay. As soon as I removed my network
antenna to stop the network traffic, everything worked fine again.
