My work-around when my UX21 screen goes blank is to press the suspend
hot-key, then resume the laptop. This restores the screen visibility for
me.

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest
upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug
report at bugzilla.kernel.org [1]? That will allow the upstream
Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to
the bug.

Updating BIOS to the latest available version (210) - won't help.
Trying Fedora - exactly the same results.
It's may be some hardware problem, but with pre-installed Windows wasn't any
issues with screen.

I've discovered another workaround, it works like this:
- booting with default arguments (without 'nomodeset')
- if on lightdm login screen goes blank, then attaching working external
monitor via miniHDMI->VGA adaptor makes screen on laptop visible again
