Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all
reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since
that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fix
I installed Lubuntu 12.10 from the Lubuntu-Alternate iso instead of
Lubuntu-Desktop iso to avoid the spinning cursor and black screen hang.

Title:
Definitely an installation problem. I tried unsuccessfully to install Xubuntu
12.04, Lubuntu 12.04, Lubuntu 11.10.
My workaround : (re)load Xubuntu 11.10, upgrade to Xubuntu 12.04 (OK), load
lxde (Lubuntu functionality, OK).
My old (beloved) notebook : Compaq Evo N600c, Pentium 3-M, 768 MB RAM,
... whirly still running after the splash screen disappearing ...
other processes in Live Mode are accessible or launchable
