surprisingly removing the @xfce4-power-manager from the file
/etc/xdg/lxsession/Lubuntu/autostart gets rid of the bug!

Sorry, I should have been more verbose. This issue reminds me of an
issue I experienced a while back on plain ubuntu where the network
indicator applet would half load or crash. It waso a launchpad bug.
I'll dig it out and add a link to it here.
