I've probably misunderstood you, sorry)
I'm using the GTK+ version of Transmission, and I did know the Qt
version can be used as a client for qt-daemon.
If I've finally understood you correctly, you had transmission-daemon
2.33 running on one (server) machine and transmission-qt 2.51 on
I'm slightly confused about what's 'awkward' about this description.
I'm sure you're aware that with Transmission the gui and daemon can run
on different machines?
Anyway, the report can be closed as the issue can be solved by upgrading
both gui and daemon to the latest version.

I haven't yet understood what was the problem. Description is too
awkward.
You had 2 separate computers; how could the problems with app on one
computer affect another machine???

Two separate machines: server was version 2.33 and desktop (gui) version
2.51. They connect fine but downloads go in this error state for one
reason or the other. I have now also upgraded the server to
Transmission version 2.51 (as part of 12.04 upgrade) which solved the issue.
