Hi, I think it's the same thing in Bug #987220, which I've just posted two
comments for it:
#47 and #48.
Such hang has a very high probability to occur. (more than 90% on those
6 laptops I recently installed.)

I have the same problem with two (very) different hardware:
An Intel based computer with an NVidia graphic card and the clased-source
driver. Using a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04. See hw1
An AMD based computer, with an AMD graphic card using the open source
driver. Upgraded to precise. See hw2
Christopher, thanks for the update. Regarding the testing of the
upstream mainline build, I have tried in the past to run the mainline
builds. However the installation has always completed but with errors. I
think this is because, some of my kernel modules are not compiled since
there is no *source
