I've just done this with the latest Ubuntu Alternate ISO and didn't have
a problem. My partition setup was:
Apple partition table
Apple boot partition
Ext 4
swap
I split the ext4 50%. All was well.

It should be EXT4 only. I wipe the HD the first time by installing to
the entire disk, for the one test case, then later I go and try to do
the other test case which is to resize the existing install:
