I have a related problem. Ubuntu won't automatically switch time zones,
although the option is selected in the "time & date" settings.
Ubuntu 12.04 as well.

Interesting, ubiquity should notice that internet connection was lost &
use offline friendly interface for timezone selection.

connection. From the logs, it appears that the connection to geonames-
lookup.ubuntu.co
