Problem solved. I specified the printer in /etc/sane.d/pixma.conf, and,
lo and behold, all is well. I'm not sure why my scanner is no longer
auto-detected (libsane?), but simple-scan is working well. Thank you!

the important thing is to narrow down when exactly the regression happened.
ubuntu 11.10 and ubuntu 12.04 differ in more than just the simple-scan version,
but the scanner driver from libsane-backends changed as well and is probably
the problem here. so we would like to know if on ubuntu 12.04 o

On 2012-04-17 - upgraded simple-scan 3.4.0-0ubuntu3 to 3.4.1-0ubuntu1
I have not attempted to reinstall previous version, but I will. While I
understand that "Simple Scan does not support your scanner perfectly," the
point is that it did work. The scanner continu

what update? what was the version before the update? does reinstalling the old
version fix the problem?
there was a change to the driver command order, it might cause the regression.
