FYI: I have the same problem on a Lenovo IdeaPad Z370 laptop.
I just installed CentOS 6.2. It uses:
gnome-power-manager-2.28.3-5.el6.x86_64
You could try getting a later version, see:
http://projects.gnome.org/gnome-power-manager/
I'll wait for an update in my base packages.
