Adding a bug task on Nux, which could be at fault here. Jay, do you have any clue on why this is happening? The animation is nothing but a LauncherDragWindow which is being used for the animation, and getting hidden and un-referenced when reaching the launcher to be replaced with a normal launcher

Bilal: no problem there, strangely I've not had a single compiz/unity problem during the whole of Precise apart from this one. I definitely think it's a compiz bug though as it was very similar to a bug I had on my desktop with 5.8 (I think) where there was multiple shadows and glitchy rendering.
