Also, I use an intel GPU too, and I don't have this problem. The
original reporter also uses an intel GPU, so I doubt if the driver is at
fault here.

Jay, do you have any clue on why this is happening? The animation is
nothing but a LauncherDragWindow which is being used for the animation,
and getting hidden and un-referenced when reaching the launcher to be
replaced with a normal launcher
This problem also affects me and I can drag icons away from the launcher
and release them without a problem. I also reported a bug on this one:

Maybe this isn't useful info, but the new apps in the launcher thing
never worked on

Bilal: no problem there, strangely I've not had a single compiz/unity
problem during the whole of Precise apart from this one. I definitely
think it's a compiz bug though as it was very similar to a bug I had on
my desktop with 5.8 (I think) where there was multiple shadows and
glitchy rendering.
Try dragging an icon away from the launcher and releasing it. Do you
have the same problem then?
Because, the code being used for the animation is the same as the one
for animating when the icon is left away from the launcher.
