Problem fixed without upgrading gthumb to the ppa level. The error was
likely fixed by a dependency library that was updated via usual Ubuntu
updates. I believe that this bug can be closed.

Ghtumb package in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS is very old (ver. 2.14) while latest
upstream version is 3.1.2 - please install latest Ghtumb 3.1.2 package
from webupd8team repository ppa:webupd8team/gthumb
(https://launchpad.net/~webupd8team/+archive/gthumb ), check if crash
still persist and write comment her
Possibly the same problem here.
- also an amd64 machine
- when importing photos from ~/Dropbox/Camera\ Uploads
- auto-tagging
- auto-folder using a custom filter (that wrked for years).
- same final backtrace frame
