This mechanism has been replaced by another one using systemd in version
1.8.0.
After trying several combinations and playing around, I found that my
initial assumptions were incomplete, and that the problem arised from
the application using the PC/SC interface, not pcscd. I'll therefore
change the bug status to invalid.
The full story:
I use a Java application called MOCCA
pcscd is started correctly with no error.
I don't know why it does not work.
You can configure pcscd to be stared at boot as explained in comment #2.

Sorry, here is the requested output. Before, no pcscd was running, after
launching the command there is task "pcscd --auto-exit -df" shown in
the output of ps.

You did not follow the procedure correctly.
Use "PCSCLITE_PCSCD_ARGS=-df pcsc_scan" on the SAME line
And be sure to kill any running pcscd process before.
And do not do that as root but as a normal user.

1.7.4-2ubuntu2. Find below the requested output:

Using rea
systemd support was added in pcsc-lite version 1.8.0. Ubuntu precise
still only have version 1.7.4-2ubuntu2

To check what your problem is do:
1. kill any running pcscd
2. install pcsc-tools package if not yet installed
3. run in a terminal "PCSCLI
Set to Confirmed as also reported on the above mentioned website.

Workaround:
- Edit /etc/init.d/pcscd and change line 43 from "exit 0" to "# exit 0".
- Then start pcscd using "/etc/init.d/pcscd start".
- The daemon should now also start on the next reboot.
