Maybe you can ask upstream?
This bug is a "wishlist" item, either it should not force any AGP speed
(and use the BIOS default) or it should be documented in the man page
why x1 is chosen as a default.

all right so it is not a bug...
using the option agpmode glxinfo reports 4x.
I really don't understand why this could not be done by default... the
man does not report that there are bugs or malfunctions (as it does
for other options that are not disabled by default)

Does glxinfo report 4x when you use the APGMode option?
If you read man radeon, you'll see that x1 is the default, hence it's
not a bug.

forget fglrx. I normally use the radeon driver, and as I told you,
when launching glxinfo the output says agp 1x.

I got an IGP320M which is correctly set by kernel at AGP 4x.
Can you send dmesg output ?
