I also filled a bug report on Drupal's website.

It would appear disabling Drupal's locales module will work around the
problem for now.
Everything I have seen though would indicate to me that the real bug is
in php4.

This is on an Intel EM64T box (2.6.15-27-amd64-xeon) with all current
updates applied.
Is there anything Brian or myself can provide to get some help with this
?
We're hitting this a fair bit at the moment as it's the only way to move
certain nodes around in Drupal. :-(
