I had this issue following an update. Turns out my .Xauthority file was
600 root:root. I gave it back to my user and was able to log in ok.
Looks like something caused root to claim sole ownership.

the session is correctly started from lightdm but exit later on

as ~/.xsession-errors for the user you tried to log in to?
