UPDATE:
My two displays work now without error messages. I followed the following
tutorial to install the newest driver from the ATI web site:

I am affected by the same bug and followed this post to change the
xorg.conf settings: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1883119
So the text used is:

Doesn't seem like a driver issue to me. A fix for this problem on 11.10
involved increasing the size of the "virtual" parametr under "display"
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. 12.04 has no xorg.conf, but I expect that hte
problem and its resolution will be the same in spirit.
